Indonesian Civet Coffee for Sale

Civet Coffee ~ The most expensive coffee in the world

Superlatively expensive, civet coffee or kopi luwak is famously prepared for roasting by passage through a civet cat. Its legendary reputation is up to snuff.

Civet coffee or kopi luwak is variously marketed as 'cat-poo coffee' or occasionally 'the most expensive coffee in the world'. The reason it's so costly is that, rather than harvesting the coffee fruit (coffee cherries) and extracting the bean by the usual methods, some Sumatran villagers collect the faeces of the civet cats which live on the plantations and pick out the beans.

It's said that the beans taste better either because of something that happens to them inside the cat, or possibly because the clever little beasts pick only the finest and ripest of fruit. Only about half a tonne is produced each year and the headlines just write themselves.

Kopi luwak producers have recently begun to set their little gatherers loose on Arabica rather than Robusta beans. This is a much better flavoured variety. On first taste it's fantastic with all of the higher notes you tend to get with a well-roasted bespoke coffee.

History of Civet Coffee

The history of civet coffee (kopi luwak) cannot be separated from the history of its origin country, Indonesia. This country has been long revered for its well-known coffee harvests. Indonesia was a Dutch colony since 16th century. In the early days, the Dutch established the cash-crop plantations which included coffee plantations in Indonesia’s Sumatra and Java Island. During the colony period, the Dutch disallowed the native coffee farmers to collect coffee fruits for their own consumptions. However, those farmers also had a high desire for coffee beverage.

Soon, they realized that certain species of civet (luwak) ate those coffee cherries, yet they left the coffee cherries undigested in their droppings. The natives figured it was easier to collect the coffee cherries from the ground rather than having to pick them from the trees. They then collected the cherries, cleaned, roasted and ground it to make coffee beverage. Surprisingly, it produced a remarkable coffee aroma. From then, the fame of aromatic civet coffee (kopi luwak) spread from the natives to Dutch coffee plantation owners and soon became everyone’s favorite till nowadays, and the best of civet coffee is known produced in the highlands of West Java.
